Usugrow’s new line, Shinganist, is on it’s way…
SHINGANIST to be released with August’s Upper Playground offering
Upper Playground is excited to announce a partnership with Japanese artist, Usugrow, in the creation of a new line called “Shinganist.” Derived from the Japanese word “Shingan,” (meaning mind’s eye), “the line represents those people who create by seeing things in their mind’s eye, and are not bothered or influenced by things around them.” Inspired by “underground Japanese lifestyle,” Shinganist will feature the art of Usugrow, as well as guest artists. Upper Playground and Usugrow view the line as a vehicle to introduce a new generation of Japanese artists to the world. No stranger to designing clothing, Usugrow has been running his own Japanese-based clothing line for the past 12 years. Shinganist is his first clothing line in the U.S and will launch on August 1st.

About Saber:
Born in the Los Angeles suburb of Glendale, Saber was raised by creative parents and discovered his passion for art at an early age. At age 13, his cousins introduced him to graffiti when they took him to see the spray paint-covered Belmont Tunnel. From that moment on, Saber was hooked. After honing his skills on local walls, Saber joined MSK and was later inducted into legendary piecing crew AWR. While painting graffiti is his main focus, Saber also explores other artistic avenues. He is known for his surreal landscapes, which are pulled from the deep, dark places in his psyche. Saber has also created groundbreaking metal and wood sculptures of abstract letterforms and painstakingly rendered hyper-realistic canvases.

STUSSY x JOHN POUND part I

STUSSY X JOHN POUND

If you were alive in the mid eighties, then you have probably seen John Pound’s work even if you don’t know his name. He’s the artist responsible for drawing the phenomenon that was Garbage Pail Kids. Released by the trading card company Topps in 1985, Garbage Pail Kids left a mark on many childhoods. For our Spring 2009 collection, we worked with John on a series of tee shirts, mixing his famous style with some of our iconic imagery.

STUSSY: As a kid growing up, were you into art, comic books or cartoons?
POUND: As a real little kid, just about when I was learning to read, my dad had these paperback books of cartoons. They were reprints of Mad comics, so this would be in the mid 50’s. Those were really intriguing, they seemed kind of weird and kind of dense and sweaty and kind of strange. I liked watching the cartoons on TV, that they had on Saturday morning. Things I particularly liked were like the Warner Brothers cartoons, where they had some real crazy stuff going on. For comic books, as a kid, I was reading what I could find. I remember things like Uncle Scrooge and Donald Duck, they had particularly good stories. And then, there was a start of Superheroes going on, I remember DC comics with The Flash, Green Lantern, stuff like that. Stuff like that didn’t stick with me as much as the stuff I like to call the funny animal comics.

STUSSY: Funny animal comic? What’s that?
POUND: Donald Duck would be a big named one. Mighty Mouse , although that’s not one of the ones I remember as a kid. I like that style of cartooning, where things are just a humor style, basically.

When I really got into art was in high school. I was walking home from school one day, in 9th grade, and I saw this little newspaper in the gutter and it had a little cartoon on it. I picked it up and remember thinking “Hey, that looks pretty cool.” It was this thing drawn by a cartoonist named Scott Shaw, who was at the nearby high school and a couple years ahead of me. And so I thought, “Hey, that looks like the kind of thing I’d like to do.” So, I signed up for the journalism class next year, and got to, well, learn the ropes in journalism: to become the next in line to do the cartoons for the high school newspaper.

Scott and I became good friends. And this was right around the time underground comics were starting to come out, the late 60’s. Sometimes after school, I would walk over to a head shop or something like that and pick up early copies of Zap Comics and Freak Brothers, things like that.

STUSSY: That opened your mind to the wackier, adult side of comics?
POUND: Yeah, somewhere in there, lets see, between being a little kid and being a high school kid, I’d stopped collecting comics, so when I resumed it in high school, this is kind of screwed up, but I thought “It’s OK to collect comics now, if I’m going to be an artist” And the irony is that I got into much more, what would be considered more rebellious kind of material. With the undergrounds and, you know in the later years, with the Garbage Pale Kids and that stuff. Little did I know that would be, you know, a big direction the art was going to go for me

POUND: 當我很小的時候, 差不多是在開始識字的年齡, 我爸爸有一些卡通平裝書. 那些是再版的MAD漫畫書 http://www.dccomics.com/mad/ 那時大概是50年代中期. 那些書真的是很吸引人, 好像很古怪, 愚鈍又奇怪之類的書. 我喜歡看星期六早上播出的電視卡通片. 我特別喜歡華納兄弟的卡通, 因為他們常有一些真的很瘋狂的東西. 至於漫畫書嘛, 做為一個小孩, 有什麼我就看什麼. 我記得Uncle Scrooge和唐老鴨, 他們有一些很不錯的故事. 然後, 開始有一些超級英雄的漫畫出來. 我記得DC漫畫出的The Flash, Green Lantern之類的. 那些東西不像我所謂的滑稽動物漫畫那麼吸引我.

STUSSY: 滑稽動物漫畫? 那是什麼?
POUND: 唐老鴨就是最有名的一個. 還有太空飛鼠(Mighty Mouse), 雖然那不是我童年時代的漫畫. 我喜歡那類的卡通. 基本上就是有幽默感的那種.

我真正接觸藝術是從高中開始. 在九年級的時候, 有一天在放學走路回家的路上, 我看到一份報紙上的一則卡通. 我撿起這份報紙然後心裡想:嘿, 這個還蠻酷的. 那則漫畫是一個叫Scott Shaw的卡通達人畫的, 他比我大幾歲, 也念附近的高中. 所以我想: 嘿, 那看起來像是我也會想做的東西. 所以隔年我就報名參加新聞事業班, 並且成為下一個幫高中報紙畫漫畫的人.

Scott和我後來成為好朋友. 那時剛好是地下漫畫書開始受歡迎的時候, 大概是60年代後期. 有時候放學後, 我會到漫畫書店去挑一些Zap Comics和Freak Brothers早期出的漫畫書.

STUSSY: 那因而啟發了你成人面以及古怪漫畫的心靈?
POUND: 對呀, 差不多是在我還是個小孩和高中生之間那段時間. 在高中之前我停止收集漫畫一段時間. 所以當我高中時又開始收集漫畫時, 我感覺有點糟. 但是我又想:如果我要成為藝術家的話, 現在收集漫畫又何妨! 諷刺的是我不但收集, 我還收集那種更反叛, 叛逆的東西. 你知道, 在那個時期, 地下次文化的東西還有Garbage Pale Kids的東西. 我不知道會變怎樣, 但一個藝術的大方向就在我前面等著我.

This month’s mix comes from another London alumni, Plastician who blasts our ears with some of his favorite Dub Step and Grime tracks. Plastician is an underground king rocking the UK scene for over 8 years now. While running his own show, creating his own label “Terrorhythm Recordings,” we are lucky that this man devoted some of his time to create this mix for us to step to.

Stussy X Dondi Tees

To say Dondi contributed a lot to the graffiti scene would be an understatement. Considered the stylistic master of graffiti writing in American culture Dondi White has left a deep impression on many contemporary artist of our time. His work still remains vivid and retains its excitement as it did when he first conjured it in the early 80′s. Therefore, in April’s artist series Stussy features the work of Dondi White along with a Dondi Zine (sketches from ’83-’85″) to hit you with another dose of historic collaboration. Cop these tees before the next season rolls around and they are gone.

Walrus TV Featuring Ricky Powell

Legendary photographer Ricky Powell is the latest artist featured on Walrus TV. There isn’t much that’s not already known about this legendary photographer. His photo subjects range from ordinary street people around his neighborhood, underground musicians, mainstream artists, celebrities, you name it. Perhaps his most notable works are the timeless New York pictures from the 80′s. This man has traveled the world, writes his own column called The Doloist, is collaborating on a sneaker with Converse, and of course gets down with Upper Playground. Here’s a video from “Dithers” featuring the man back in the day to present day Ricky Powell.

Shepard Fairey May Day March Posters

Today’s May Day March is a symbol of people demanding change and equality through activism. Unlike previous times where people remained silent with arms crossed, people will be taking it to the streets to take action and change immigration policies and perceptions. Shepard Fairey along with Ernesto Yerena, who shot the photos and helped with the graphics, collaborated on two posters for the May Day March with all the proceeds going toward donations and materials for the march. Zack De La Rocha and Producciones Cimarron also provided feedback and support. Fairey’s contribution to this campaign seemed to sprout from inner hope and the fact that he comes from a family of English and Scottish immigrants. Much like Obama, Fairey strongly agrees that this country needs an immigration reform and every human should be given equal human rights. Support the cause, and stop the hatred.

REBEL8的專屬設計師Mike Giant, 1989年高中畢業後開始塗鴉. 對Mike來說, 塗鴉可以說是一個將他的藝術天份呈現給大眾最直接的方式, 同時也可以做一些反其道而行的事. 比如說, 他和一些朋友到Home Depot去, 把整個購物車專滿了噴漆罐子, 然後又將全部的噴漆罐子丟到園藝區後落跑. 這樣頑皮的事做了好幾次, 但Mike很得意的說他們都沒被抓到過. (haha….此為作者的笑聲)

STUSSY X MARK WARD

STUSSY x MARK WARD

Mark Ward is a graphic artist based in South London, UK. His work references skate graphics and American culture combined with the everyday mundane and elements of his British identity to bring a different perspective to the American dream. Known for his colorful and humorous work, Mark likes to create imagery that is eye catching but with a hint of a darker undertone.

Mark grew up skateboarding in the early 90′s. Mesmerized by the board displays on skate shop walls, reading any skate magazine he could find and watching American based TV shoes and skate videos, he became aware that his South London environment didn’t seem to reflect the sun drenched world he was being sold as a teenager.

Having graduated from Central St. Martins, he started to work in advertising, but with the fascination of America still in his blood, decided he needed to fulfill this need. So he left the world of advertising behind and started creating artwork to feed his American obsession. He has since worked with brands including Nike and Burton Snowboards and has been included in several books and journals relating to street fashion.

In this signature series for Stussy, Mark’s fascination with Americana shines through. Using original Stussy phrases as the springboard, he illustrates a selection of Stussy icons in his unique bold style.

Mike Giant x Dalek Exhibition

Mike Giant is notorious in the graffiti world and is also head of one of San Francisco’s own street brands REBEL8. Similarly, James Marshall , renowned artist known as Dalek cemented his name in the art world by creating his iconic Space Monkey character. Now in their peak, both artists are exhibiting their work and individual styles along with a book release including Dalek’s His Majesty and Giant’s Muerte at the Galerie Magda Danysz in Paris. These two artists have come a long way professionally, enduring difficult struggles and developing individual artistic talents through their surroundings and life experiences. The exhibition will open April 25th and run through May 23rd of this year.

Run-DMC, the legendary hip hop/rock trio were among the musicians inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame earlier this month. So why the post you may ask? Well, for most of us in the fashion industry Run-DMC were massive inspirational trendsetters and one of the first to blend rock & roll and hip hop. Their keen sense for fashion, sneakers, and music have clearly influenced where we are today in the street fashion world. Therefore, we should be grateful of this groups legacy for paving the way for others and being one of the greatest influential acts in hip hop to date.
